Agarose gel electrophoresis

Pros

  1. Easily made, pour and handled because the gel setting is a physical rather than chemical change.

  2. Gels can be refrigerated in a plastic bag or film.

  3. The gel sets quickly (usually in 30-60 minutes).

  4. Increase or decrease molecular sieving by manipulate the pore sizes.

  5. Non-toxic of agarose gel.

  6. Various buffer can be used to alter resolution and run times.

Cons

  1. The gel do not have a uniform pore size.

  2. The gel can be altered and may provide inaccurate results.

  3. High percentage of gels are often brittle and may not set evenly.

  4. Low percentage gels are weak and may break when lifted.
